Artist’s Statement

Visionary and spiritual artist Jan Wright, formerly of Salt Lake City, Utah, presently lives on the edge of wilderness in northern New Mexico. Her intensely vibrant watercolors express Fifth World energies: that of manifesting Spirit in the physical. Often Spirit Beings, either kachinas or animals, emerge from the landscape or are reflected in the waters of her canyon narrows paintings. Thus we begin seeing them in physical reality in the world around us; this marks our human evolvement to a higher spiritual consciousness.

Jan’s work reflects the voices of ancient and animal spirits, often ascending from the landscape, a ruin, or an Anasazi vessle, or they are hidden in a canyon’s textures and shadows. Her knowledge and study of petroglyphs often play a role in adding intrigue and more meaning to a scene. Her dramatic ‘Spirit Horse Canyon’ honors the passing of a neighbor’s beautiful horse by his image appearing to gallop into a deep canyon lit by setting sun and moonlight.

"Often an image comes to me just as I awake in the morning; then I give it time to develop more clearly. I may ask for guidance during my sunrise prayers to allow the animal or spirit to ‘speak through me’ and allow the painting to flow from Creator through my heart and hands onto the paper. That’s when the magic happens!"
Jan’s vivid, more intense color comes from glazing layers of transparent color on top of each other. "With watercolor, it’s very tricky and only a few colors can be used in this way without turning the painting to mud," Jan says. "Learning to not overwork a painting is a challenge."

Jan’s paintings are in numerous private collections around the country as well as the Salt Lake County Arts Collection. She has had nine successful one woman exhibits in Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. Her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 led her to teaching art, watercolor, beadwork, macramé, and creating personal shields, as well as Tai Chi. Her greeting cards, posters, and ‘Hands of the Ancients’ Medicine Cards (22 exquisite paintings of petroglyphs and pictographs with useful booklet and hand painted bag) have found their way into many shops and homes.

"A few years ago, with much gratitude in my heart, I vowed in all things to creatively express Spirit (Creator, God, Goddess, Father Sky) and Mother Earth so deeply as to touch the hearts and souls of all who look upon my work."
